Originating from the mountainous regions of Europe, Sempervivum 'Purple Haze' is a captivating succulent that forms rosettes of deep purple leaves. This hardy plant is an excellent choice for rock gardens, borders, or container gardening, adding a touch of vibrant colour and distinctive texture to any space.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Deep purple, fleshy leaves form a captivating rosette, growing up to 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter.
- Flowers: Pink, star-shaped flowers emerge on tall stalks in summer, adding a delightful contrast to the purple foliage.
- Growth Habit: Compact and low-growing, forming a dense mat of rosettes that spread slowly over time.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. At least four hours of direct sunlight per day will ensure vibrant colours.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: Tolerates average humidity levels. Good air circulation is beneficial.
- Temperature: Hardy to -20°C (-4°F). Can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but prefers cooler conditions.
- Fertiliser: Feed once a year in spring with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength.
- Potting: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus and succulent mix. Repot only when the plant outgrows its container.
- Propagation: Easily propagated through offsets (chicks) that form around the base of the plant.
