Euphorbia francoisii 'sip-et' – Red-Edged Rosette with a Sculptural Base (WA Prohibited)
Euphorbia francoisii 'sip-et' is a cultivated hybrid form of the Madagascan native Euphorbia francoisii, selected for its deeply pigmented foliage and eye-catching caudex. This striking specimen belongs to the “Red Devil” cultivar group, known for its richly coloured leaves and distinct growth habit. Indigenous to the arid southern regions of Madagascar, Euphorbia francoisii naturally forms a caudex to store water, allowing it to thrive in harsh conditions.
Distinctive features:
- Elongated, leathery leaves in deep maroon to burgundy, accented with green margins and fine red veining
- Leaves arranged in a compact spiral rosette, often with slightly undulating or ruffled edges
- Unique mottling and marbling, especially under strong light, enhancing ornamental value
- Substantial pale caudex with a sculptural form and flared basal roots emerging above the soil line
- Small greenish-bronze cyathia (false flowers), adding interest in the growing season
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect light with some direct morning sun; avoid harsh midday exposure
- Water: Let the soil dry thoroughly between waterings; water sparingly during winter
- Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity; good airflow is essential
- Media: Use a gritty, well-draining cactus or succulent mix
- Temperature: Thrives between 18–30°C; protect from temperatures below 12°C
- Fertiliser: Apply diluted balanced fertiliser once monthly in spring and summer
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years to refresh soil and accommodate caudex development
Additional Notes:
- Slow-growing, but well worth the wait for mature form and colour intensity
- Leaf colour may deepen with seasonal temperature shifts and light exposure
- Collectible due to rarity and distinctive Red Devil lineage
- Contains a milky sap that may irritate skin; toxic to pets and humans if ingested
Euphorbia francoisii 'sip-et' captivates with its rich foliage tones and sculptural charm. A showcase of modern hybridisation, it is a rewarding species for advanced succulent collectors seeking beauty and botanical intrigue. With proper care, this hybrid brings year-round interest and becomes a living sculpture in any collection.
