Euphorbia francoisii 'Sip-Ppaed' – Caudex-Ramified Rubra Form (WA Prohibited)
Euphorbia francoisii 'Sip-Ppaed' is a hybrid cultivar of Madagascan origin, developed through selective breeding to highlight vibrant colour and form. Native to the arid southern reaches of Madagascar, this hybrid displays a striking branching caudex and luxuriant rubra-hued foliage. Its ornamental allure lies in the dynamic interplay of textured leaf veining and compact caudiciform growth.
Distinctive features:
- Rich rubra-toned leaves with dark venation and subtle iridescence.
- Ramified caudex with sculptural form, enhancing visual appeal and water storage efficiency.
- Inflorescences bear soft green cyathia with contrasting yellow glands, adding seasonal interest.
- Compact rosette habit with overlapping leaves, providing a bonsai-like silhouette.
- Undersides of leaves display a maroon flush, intensifying in bright light.
Care Tips:
- Light: Thrives in bright filtered light; avoid intense midday sun which can scorch foliage.
- Water: Let the soil dry completely between waterings; overwatering can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: Tolerant of low humidity but appreciates good air circulation.
- Media: Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent mix with added pumice or perlite.
- Temperature: Prefers warmth; keep above 12°C during cooler months.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser during active growth in spring and summer.
- Repotting: Infrequent; only when necessary to avoid disturbing the caudex.
Additional Notes:
- Like many Euphorbias, it exudes a toxic latex sap if damaged.
- Best grown in shallow pots to accentuate the caudex and promote surface rooting.
- Slow growth habit but highly rewarding with age.
- A favourite among collectors for its compact form and dramatic foliage contrast.
- Flowers are relatively inconspicuous but provide seasonal charm and contrast.
This Euphorbia francoisii 'Sip-Ppaed' hybrid captivates with its architectural caudex and luxuriant rubra-toned foliage. It is not merely a succulent but a living sculpture, thriving under attentive care and admired for its rare combination of colour, form, and resilience.
