Euphorbia francoisii 'sip-sawng' – Red-Fringed Koh Tao Hybrid (WA Prohibited)
Euphorbia francoisii 'sip-sawng' is a striking Koh Tao hybrid of the species native to the arid southern reaches of Madagascar. This particular form is admired for its unusually bold leaf colouring—deep green with intense red margins—and a stout, water-storing caudex. Hybridised in Southeast Asia, this cultivar stands out with its compact growth habit and vivid leaf textures.
Distinctive features:
- Glossy, dark green leaves edged with vivid red; subtly ruffled with a slightly leathery feel
- Compact, upright growth with a thickened caudex supporting the stem
- Small, chartreuse cyathia (false flowers) appearing intermittently throughout the growing season
- Distinct Koh Tao form: chunky and architectural with appealing bonsai-like proportions
Care Tips:
- Light: Bright, indirect sunlight; some protection from scorching midday rays
- Water: Let the soil dry thoroughly between waterings; avoid excess moisture
- Humidity: Tolerant of lower humidity but appreciates gentle airflow
- Media: Free-draining cactus mix with added pumice or perlite
- Temperature: Prefers warmth; keep above 12°C, especially in winter
- Fertiliser: Feed with diluted cactus fertiliser during active growth
- Repotting: Only when root-bound or caudex growth demands it; usually every 2–3 years
Additional Notes
- Native to Madagascar; this hybrid is cultivated selectively in Southeast Asia
- Leaves may deepen in tone with increased sun exposure
- Ideal for collectors seeking bold contrast and compact growth
- Contains milky sap which can irritate skin
