Hoya patella
An Extraordinary Hoya with Saucer-Shaped Flowers
Hoya patella is a truly captivating species that stands out with its unique saucer-shaped flowers. This rare Hoya, native to Southeast Asia, is a prized addition to any plant collection and is sure to spark conversation.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Small, ovate leaves with a deep green colour and a slightly fuzzy texture. The leaves are closely spaced along the slender vines, creating a lush appearance.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of extraordinary saucer-shaped flowers with a vibrant pink to red colour. The flowers have a velvety texture and a sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening.
- Growth Habit: This Hoya has a vining growth habit with slender vines that can reach a metre (3 feet) or more in length. It thrives when provided with a support to climb, such as a trellis or moss pole, or it can be grown in a hanging basket.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some direct morning or evening sun can promote flowering, but avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top few centimetres (inch) of soil to dry out between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Hoya thrives in moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing the plant to cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly during the spring and summer growing seasons. Reduce or cease fertilisation during the autumn and winter months.
- Repotting: Repot every one to two years as needed, using a well-draining potting mix suitable for epiphytic plants. Spring is the ideal time for repotting.
