Tillandsia 'Kimberly'
Tillandsia 'Kimberly' is a unique hybrid resulting from the cross between Tillandsia usneoides (Spanish moss) and Tillandsia recurvata (ball moss). This cultivar exhibits long, thin, silver leaves that trail gracefully, forming delicate, wispy clumps reminiscent of a denser Spanish moss. The plant produces fragrant flowers on the ends of extended stems, adding to its ornamental appeal. Its growth habit allows it to create cascading clusters, making it ideal for hanging displays or draped arrangements.
Distinctive features:
- Hybrid of Tillandsia usneoides × Tillandsia recurvata
- Long, slender, silver leaves forming trailing, wispy clumps
- Fragrant flowers borne on elongated stems
- Growth pattern similar to a thicker Spanish moss
- Continuously grows and produces offsets, forming extensive clusters over time
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight; an east or west-facing window is ideal
- Water: Mist or dunk 2–3 times per week; ensure the plant dries completely between waterings to prevent rot
- Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity environments with good air circulation
- Media: Suitable for hanging or draping; does not require soil or mounting
- Temperature: Optimal growth between 15–30°C; protect from frost in cooler climates
- Fertiliser: Apply diluted air plant fertiliser bi-weekly during warmer months and monthly during winter
Additional Notes:
- Named by hybridiser Mark Dimmitt in honour of one of Paul's daughters
- Grows continuously, similar to T. usneoides, creating large, decorative clumps over time
- Not toxic to pets
