Echinopsis peruviana (Syn. Trichocereus peruvianus) – The Peruvian Torch Cactus
Echinopsis peruviana, also known as Trichocereus peruvianus, is a striking columnar cactus native to the high-altitude regions of the Andes in Peru. Valued for its rapid growth, blue-green stems, and large nocturnal flowers, this species thrives in well-draining soil and bright sunlight. It is a popular choice among collectors for its resilience and ornamental appeal.
Distinctive Features
- Growth Habit: A tall, columnar cactus that can reach heights of up to 6 metres (20 feet), with multiple branching stems.
- Spines: Light brown to golden spines arranged in clusters along its prominent ribs.
- Flowers: Large, white, fragrant blooms that open at night and attract pollinators such as moths and bats.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
- Water: Allow soil to dry completely between waterings; drought-tolerant once established.
- Humidity: Thrives in dry conditions; does not require high humidity.
- Media: Well-draining soil mix with sand, perlite, or pumice.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate brief periods of cold down to -6°C (20°F).
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh soil and encourage growth.
Additional Notes
- Fast-growing compared to many other columnar cacti, making it ideal for landscape use.
- Can be propagated easily from cuttings, which should be left to callous before planting.
- May produce offsets at the base, leading to a clumping growth habit over time.
- Toxicity: Not considered toxic to pets but should not be ingested.
Echinopsis peruviana (Syn. Trichocereus peruvianus) is a robust and visually striking cactus well-suited for both container gardening and arid landscapes. With minimal care, it rewards growers with rapid growth and beautiful blooms, making it a favourite among cactus enthusiasts.
