Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’, commonly known as Black Rose, is a cultivar grown for its dark purple to nearly black foliage and architectural form. The rosettes consist of smooth, spoon-shaped leaves that deepen in colour under bright light, often appearing near black in full sun and showing hints of red in cooler weather. In late winter to spring, mature rosettes send up tall conical clusters of small yellow star-shaped flowers. After flowering, the blooming rosette naturally dies back, while offsets continue the plant’s growth. This cultivar has also been listed historically under older or incorrect names such as Aeonium atropurpureum nigrum v. Schwartzkopf and Aeonium ‘Schwartzkopf’, which are now considered synonyms for Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkop’.
Care Tips:
- Light – Position in bright light to full sun to achieve the deepest foliage colour and maintain compact growth.
- Water – Water moderately during the growing season and reduce during summer dormancy when rosettes close and growth slows.
- Humidity – Prefers low humidity and good airflow.
- Media – Use a coarse, free-draining succulent mix to prevent waterlogging.
- Temperature – Grows best between 10–25 °C; protect from frost.
- Fertiliser – Feed with a diluted, balanced fertiliser during active growth.
- Repotting – Repot every 2–3 years or when offsets crowd the container, refreshing the soil to maintain drainage.

Non-Biosecurity States (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, SA): We now offer two dispatches per week for these regions:
- Tuesday Dispatch: Orders placed by Sunday 11:59 PM AEST.
- Friday Dispatch: Orders placed by Wednesday 11:59 PM AEST. Orders placed after these cut-offs will be dispatched on the next available day.
Biosecurity States (WA, NT, TAS): These orders require mandatory biosecurity treatment (PHC) and follow a specific weekly schedule:
- Cut-off: Orders must be placed by Thursday 11:59 PM AEST.
- Dispatch Day: Orders are processed over the weekend and dispatched on Tuesday.
Plant Health Certification (PHC) Fees:
- $20 fee applies to WA orders.
- $10 fee applies to NT and TAS orders. This fee is per order (not per plant) and is included in your shipping costat checkout.
