Aeonium tabuliforme Variegated 'The Plate Plant'
cancel Sold out
Aeonium tabuliforme Variegated, commonly called the Plate Plant, is a cultivated form of the species. This succulent develops a flattened rosette that can exceed 40 cm across, with leaves overlapping tightly in a geometric pattern. The variegated form introduces irregular pale yellow or cream sectors against the green leaves, creating contrasting panels across the rosette.
The species is native to the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where it grows on steep cliffs and rocky outcrops. In its natural environment, it clings to slopes and ledges, favouring well-drained volcanic soils. Unlike many other succulents, Aeonium tabuliforme grows primarily during the cooler months, slowing or going dormant during hot summers. It remains a solitary rosette throughout its life and does not produce offsets, eventually flowering once and then dying. This process typically occurs after several years, often between 4 to 10, depending on growing conditions.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or gentle morning sun. Harsh midday exposure may scorch variegated leaves.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings during the active growth season. Water sparingly in summer dormancy.
- Media: Use a coarse, free-draining mix with added sand or pumice to replicate its rocky habitat.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted fertiliser during the cooler growth season to encourage healthy rosette formation.
- Temperature: Best suited to mild climates; protect from frost and extended high heat.
- Repotting: Repot every few years to refresh soil and allow space for rosette expansion.
