Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin' Variegata – Miniature Sculptural Agave
Agave isthmensis 'Ohi Raijin' Variegata is a striking variegated form of the compact *Agave isthmensis*, native to Oaxaca in southern Mexico. This rare cultivar, often referred to as the “Dwarf Thunder Queen,” forms a tight, geometric rosette that makes it particularly prized among collectors. Its charmingly small stature and cream-edged blue leaves lend it a bonsai-like elegance, ideal for container growing.
Distinctive Features
- Variegated foliage: Leaves are edged in creamy-white to yellow, contrasting sharply with the glaucous blue-green centres.
- Compact growth: Forms symmetrical rosettes no more than 15 cm in diameter, perfect for small spaces and decorative pots.
- Armoured margins: Each leaf is edged with small, well-defined teeth and tipped with a cinnamon-coloured terminal spine.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or filtered full sun; some direct morning sun is beneficial.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry out thoroughly between waterings; drought tolerant once established.
- Humidity: Prefers dry air; does not require added humidity.
- Media: Use a sharply-draining cactus or succulent mix with added mineral grit or perlite.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 18–26°C; protect from frost below 5°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during the growing season every 6–8 weeks.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when roots begin to fill the pot; choose a shallow, wide container.
Additional Notes
- Extremely slow-growing but long-lived, making it a rewarding long-term feature plant.
- Ideal for rock gardens, succulent dish displays, or windowsill collections.
- May produce offsets sparingly at maturity.
- Toxic to pets if ingested – keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
This rare and visually captivating agave cultivar offers a delightful sculptural presence that elevates any collection of arid-loving plants. Its petite proportions and architectural leaf form make it a true botanical gem for enthusiasts seeking miniature magnificence.
