Agave victoriae-reginae is a compact species of Agave native to the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico, where it grows on rocky slopes and limestone hillsides. This slow-growing succulent forms a tight rosette of thick, triangular leaves with smooth edges and distinctive white markings along their margins and surfaces. The leaves terminate in a short, dark spine. Mature plants can reach up to 45 cm in height and spread, making it one of the smaller and more architectural agaves. Flowering occurs rarely, often after several decades, when the rosette produces a tall spike bearing cream to pale yellow flowers before the plant completes its life cycle.
Care Tips
- Light: Requires full sun for compact growth and clear leaf markings.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings; very drought tolerant once established.
- Media: Grow in a sharply draining mix, ideally sandy or gritty, to prevent root rot.
- Fertiliser: Minimal feeding is needed; a diluted cactus fertiliser in the warmer months can encourage growth.
- Temperature: Hardy to light frost; best protected from prolonged freezing conditions.
- Repotting: Rarely required due to slow growth, but can be done in spring when plants become crowded or outgrow their container.
Additional Notes
- Known to be toxic
