Alocasia rugosa 'Melo' is a rare and striking tropical plant from the rainforests of Borneo. Known for its exceptionally thick, blistered leaves that feel almost reptilian to the touch, this compact aroid is prized for its architectural appearance and unique leaf texture. Though often mistaken for an artificial plant due to its sculptural surface, it is a living example of adaptation to high humidity environments.
Distinctive Features
- Corrugated Leaves: The thick, deeply veined, matte green foliage has a hard, almost rubbery texture.
- Compact Growth: Typically grows close to the ground with a slow, clumping habit that makes it ideal for pot culture.
- Jewel Alocasia Traits: Part of the jewel group, appreciated for its petite stature and dramatic foliage, rather than flowers.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy; reduce watering slightly in winter.
- Humidity: Thrives in high humidity; ideal above 60%.
- Media: Use a chunky, well-aerated mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir.
- Temperature: Prefers warm conditions between 18–27°C; avoid cold drafts.
- Fertiliser: Feed monthly with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the pot.
Additional Notes
- Toxic to pets if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals.
