Aloe erinacea
check_circle In Stock
Aloe erinacea, commonly known as the Hedgehog Aloe, is a rare succulent species restricted to arid regions of central Namibia. It forms compact rosettes of short, triangular leaves that are grey-green to bluish in colour, densely armed with firm white teeth along the margins and sometimes on the leaf surface. Over time, it may produce small clumps. In late winter to spring, mature plants send up erect inflorescences bearing tubular flowers in shades of red to orange, sometimes with yellowish tips, which attract bird pollinators. Its compact size, armour-like leaves, and adaptation to harsh desert conditions make it well-suited to dry cultivation.
Care Tips
- Light: Requires full sun to very bright light for best colour and compact rosette form.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings; minimal water in winter dormancy.
- Media: Plant in a sharply draining gritty-sandy succulent mix to prevent root rot.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser once or twice in the growing season.
- Temperature: Thrives in hot, dry climates but must be protected from frost; best kept above 5 °C.
- Repotting: Repot infrequently, as plants grow slowly and prefer stability.
