Argyroderma fissum
check_circle In Stock
Argyroderma fissum is a compact succulent native to the quartz-rich plains of Namaqualand in South Africa, where its stone-like form allows it to blend perfectly with the rocky environment. Belonging to the Aizoaceae family, this mesemb exhibits a curious split-body form and bursts into vibrant bloom with daisy-like flowers in late summer or autumn.
Distinctive Features
- Stone-like body: Its grey-green, paired leaf lobes resemble pebbles, a clever camouflage from herbivores in the wild.
- Seasonal flowering: Produces large, showy magenta to violet flowers that open in the afternoon sun and close at dusk.
- Slow, compact growth: Forms small clumps over time, with each head consisting of just one or two leaf pairs per season.
Care Tips
- Light: Needs full sun or very bright indirect light; a south-facing windowsill is ideal.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely; avoid watering in dormancy (typically summer).
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity; excess moisture may lead to rot.
- Media: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or pumice.
- Temperature: Thrives between 15–25°C; protect from frost and cold draughts.
- Fertiliser: Apply diluted cactus fertiliser only during active growth in autumn and early spring.
- Repotting: Repot infrequently; only when the plant outgrows its container or the soil needs renewing.
