Beaucarnea recurvata 'Ponytail Palm'

Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly called the Ponytail Palm, is a slow-growing succulent species native to the semi-desert regions of eastern Mexico. Despite its common name, it is not a true palm but a member of the Asparagaceae family. In its natural habitat, it grows in rocky, well-drained soils and endures long dry periods, storing water in its swollen basal trunk.
The plant develops a distinctive bulbous base, known as a caudex, which tapers into a slender trunk topped with a rosette of long, narrow, arching leaves. This structure allows it to conserve water efficiently and withstand drought. Mature plants can branch and may reach several metres in height in the wild, though they remain much smaller in cultivation.
Flowering is rare in indoor specimens but can occur in mature plants grown outdoors in suitable climates. The inflorescences are tall, branched panicles bearing small, cream-coloured flowers that attract pollinators. Its combination of drought tolerance and distinctive form makes it a popular ornamental for both indoor and outdoor settings in warm climates.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright light, including some direct sun; tolerates full sun outdoors.
- Water: Water sparingly; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
- Media: Use a free-draining, sandy or gritty potting mix.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted balanced fertiliser during the growing season.
- Temperature: Keep above 10 °C; tolerates higher temperatures if well-watered.
- Repotting: Repot infrequently, only when rootbound, as it prefers a snug container.
