Begonia imperialis (WA Prohibited)

Begonia imperialis is native to the cloud forests of southern Mexico, where it grows in humid, shaded environments. This species is revered for its decorative foliage, which catches the light with a metallic sheen and offers a dramatic accent in shaded indoor or greenhouse settings.

Distinctive Features

• Foliage: Broad, heart-shaped leaves with deep green, velvety surfaces highlighted by silver or pink iridescence and red undersides.
• Flowers: Small, pale pink to white blooms appear sporadically, typically in late summer or autumn, but the plant is primarily grown for its striking leaves.
• Growth Habit: A compact rhizomatous species that forms a low mound, ideal for terrariums, understorey planting, or decorative pots.

Care Tips

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade – avoid harsh sun which can scorch the foliage.
• Water: Keep evenly moist but not soggy; reduce watering slightly in cooler months. Use tepid, non-chlorinated water if possible.
• Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (above 60%). Consider using a pebble tray or humidifier, especially indoors.
• Media: Best in a porous, airy mix – such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir – that holds moisture while draining freely.
• Temperature: Ideal range is 16–24 °C; protect from temperatures below 10 °C.
• Fertiliser: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser low in nitrogen to encourage foliage colour.
• Repotting: Every 1–2 years or when root-bound. Avoid deep pots – shallow containers suit its rhizomatous form.
