Begonia venosa is a shrubby species native to the rocky outcrops and dry forest margins of eastern Brazil, particularly in the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Unlike most foliage begonias, this species is adapted to relatively arid conditions and is notable for its thick, leathery leaves. The foliage is a pale green to silvery tone and covered with a fine, velvety indumentum, helping to reduce water loss in its native habitat. It produces upright stems and small clusters of white flowers.
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires bright, filtered light; tolerates some direct morning sun
- Water: Allow soil to dry significantly between waterings; avoid prolonged moisture
- Humidity: Adapts to moderate humidity; less demanding than most begonias
- Media: Well-draining mix with sand, perlite, and organic matter
- Temperature: Prefers warm conditions around 20–28°C; protect from frost
- Fertiliser: Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks with a diluted fertiliser during active growth
- Repotting: Repot every 2 years or when rootbound; avoid heavy soils
Additional Notes:
- Known to be toxic
