Biophytum sensitivum (WA Prohibited)

Biophytum sensitivum is native to tropical Asia, particularly the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This herbaceous annual is admired for its remarkable nyctinastic (sleep) and seismonastic (touch) responses, where leaflets fold inwards when disturbed or during low light conditions. It resembles a miniature tree, often attracting curiosity for its dynamic behaviour. Movement is driven by changes in turgor pressure within the pulvini at the leaf bases; a wonderful example of plant responsiveness.

• Light: Prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade; avoid direct midday sun which may scorch the leaves.
• Water: Keep soil lightly moist but never waterlogged; reduce frequency during dormancy or low growth periods.
• Humidity: Fares best in high humidity environments; ideal for terrariums or steamy bathrooms.
• Media: A rich, well-draining organic mix is best; add sand or perlite for extra drainage.
• Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 20–30 °C; intolerant of frost or cold drafts.
• Fertiliser: Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
• Repotting: Not typically necessary for this short-lived annual; grow afresh from seed each season if needed.
