Bulbophyllum bicolor
check_circle In Stock
Bulbophyllum bicolor is distributed through parts of Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia, where it grows in warm, humid forests. It develops small pseudobulbs on a creeping rhizome, each with a single narrow leaf. Inflorescences arise at the base and carry rounded umbels of many small flowers, generally yellow to orange in background colour with contrasting red or purple markings, giving the species its two-toned name. The flowers are adapted for fly pollination and feature the typical hinged lip of the genus. Its compact size and colourful, clustered blooms make it an attractive species for specialist orchid collections.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, ovoid pseudobulbs that are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch). Each pseudobulb produces a single leaf.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves have a prominent midrib and a slightly folded appearance.
- Flowers: Produces a single, captivating flower from the base of the pseudobulb. The flower is typically 5-7cm in diameter (approximately 2-3 inches) and features a striking combination of yellow and red-brown colours. The sepals are often adorned with dark red spots or stripes.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows horizontally, producing new pseudobulbs along a rhizome. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a shaded spot under a grow light is ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment. A light breeze or a position near a fan can help to prevent fungal issues.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). This will help to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: This Bulbophyllum can be grown in a pot with a well-draining orchid potting mix. A mix containing bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite is ideal. Alternatively, it can be mounted on a piece of cork bark or tree fern fibre.
