The "Crown-Bearing" Orchid: A Unique Epiphytic Gem
Bulbophyllum corolliferum, a captivating orchid species native to Southeast Asia, is a true marvel of nature. Its unique flowers and intriguing growth habit make it a fascinating addition to any orchid collection. The name "corolliferum" translates to "crown-bearing," referring to the distinctive crown-like structure at the base of its flowers.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs and Leaves: Small, egg-shaped pseudobulbs, each bearing a single, leathery, dark green leaf. The pseudobulbs are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch), and the leaves are 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches).
- Flowers: Produces a single, remarkable flower from the base of each pseudobulb. The flower has a unique structure with a prominent, crown-like lip and long, slender sepals that often have a reddish-brown colour. The flowers are typically 3-4cm in diameter (approximately 1.5 inches).
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum is an epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces. It has a creeping rhizome that produces pseudobulbs at intervals, forming a cascading or clumping growth habit.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a spot under a shade cloth is often ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment. A light breeze or a position near a fan can be beneficial.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilisation during the winter months.
- Potting: This Bulbophyllum can be grown in pots or mounted on cork bark or tree fern. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix that allows for good air circulation around the roots.
