Bulbophyllum coweniorum

Bulbophyllum coweniorum is a species restricted to Papua New Guinea, where it grows in warm, humid forests at mid elevations. It produces small pseudobulbs along a creeping rhizome, each carrying a single leaf. Inflorescences arise from the base of the pseudobulbs, forming umbels of several flowers, typically deep red to maroon with yellow highlights or striping. The flowers, though relatively small, are produced in clusters that create a colourful display. As with many members of the genus, the floral structure includes a hinged lip mechanism adapted for fly pollination. Its rarity and distinctive colouring make it a sought-after species among orchid collectors.

Distinctive Features

• Flowers: Produces clusters of small, intricate flowers that resemble ballerinas in motion. The flowers are typically 1-2cm in diameter (approximately 0.5-1 inch) and have a creamy white to pale yellow colour with reddish-purple markings. They often have a pleasant fragrance.
• Pseudobulbs: Grows from small, oval-shaped pseudobulbs that are spaced along a rhizome. The pseudobulbs are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch) and store water and nutrients for the plant.
• Leaves: Each pseudobulb produces a single, leathery leaf that is typically 5-10cm long (approximately 2-4 inches). The leaves are dark green and have a slightly folded appearance.
• Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum is an epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces. It can be mounted on cork bark or grown in a hanging basket with a well-draining orchid mix.

Care Tips

• Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
• Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
• Humidity: This orchid thrives in a humid environment. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
• Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
• Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser, diluted to half strength, every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for healthy growth. Avoid placing the plant in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
