Bulbophyllum frostii
check_circle In Stock
Bulbophyllum frostii is a miniature orchid species native to Vietnam, where it grows in humid forests at low to mid elevations. The plant forms small, closely spaced pseudobulbs with a single thick leaf. Inflorescences are short, producing clusters of 3–5 flowers close to the rhizome. The flowers are red to mahogany in colour, slipper-shaped, and sometimes speckled with lighter markings, giving them an unusual pouch-like appearance. The distinctive floral form has made this species highly sought after by collectors of miniature orchids. Like many in the genus, it is adapted for fly pollination.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs and Leaves: Small, clustered pseudobulbs, each bearing a single, leathery, dark green leaf. The leaves are typically 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches) and have a slightly grooved surface.
- Flowers: Produces a single, remarkable flower that emerges from the base of the pseudobulb. The flower is typically 5-7cm in diameter (approximately 2-3 inches) and features vibrant red petals with a velvety texture and often a contrasting yellow lip.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a creeping rhizome from which the pseudobulbs emerge. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill is often ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 20-29°C (68-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). This will help to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: This orchid thrives in a well-draining orchid potting mix. A mix of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite is ideal. Repotting is typically done every 1-2 years.
