Bulbophyllum grandiflorum var. aureum is a recognised variety native to New Guinea, where it grows in humid lowland and montane forests. It develops small pseudobulbs on a creeping rhizome, each with a single leaf. The inflorescences bear one large flower, notable for its golden-yellow coloration that distinguishes it from the typical form. Flowers are broad with long trailing sepals that can extend several centimetres, producing a dramatic, ornate display. Like other members of the genus, the species is pollinated by flies, often aided by musky or carrion-like floral scents. Its oversized golden flowers make it highly desirable among collectors of unusual orchids.
Distinctive Features
- Flowers: Produces large, stunning golden-yellow flowers that are typically 8-10cm in diameter (approximately 3-4 inches). The flowers have a unique, almost otherworldly appearance, with intricate patterns and textures. They also emit a pleasant fragrance.
- Pseudobulbs: This orchid has prominent pseudobulbs, which are swollen stems that store water and nutrients. The pseudobulbs are typically 4-6cm long (approximately 1.5-2.5 inches) and are spaced along a rhizome.
- Leaves: Each pseudobulb produces a single, leathery leaf that is typically 15-20cm long (approximately 6-8 inches). The leaves are dark green and have a slightly glossy surface.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum is an epiphyte, meaning it naturally grows on trees. It can be grown mounted on cork bark or in a hanging basket with a well-draining orchid mix.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This orchid appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
