Bulbophyllum lasiochilum
release_alert Low Stock - 2 available
Bulbophyllum lasiochilum is a miniature species found from India and Myanmar through Thailand and into Malaysia. It grows in warm, humid forests, often on mossy tree trunks in shaded conditions. The plant produces small pseudobulbs along a creeping rhizome, each with a single narrow leaf. Inflorescences arise from the base and carry umbels of several flowers, usually reddish-brown to purple, with a distinctive lip fringed in fine hairs. Like many members of the genus, it is fly-pollinated, with the lip acting as a sensitive landing platform. Its compact size and unusual flowers make it popular among orchid enthusiasts.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, ovoid pseudobulbs that are typically 1-2cm long (approximately 0.5-1 inch). Each pseudobulb produces a single leaf.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches).
- Flowers: Produces a single, fascinating flower that is approximately 2cm in diameter (approximately 1 inch). The flower has a distinctive hairy lip and is typically yellow-green in colour with reddish-brown markings.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a compact, creeping growth habit. It thrives when mounted on a piece of cork bark or tree fern fibre, allowing its rhizomes to spread and create a stunning display.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the mounting material to dry slightly between waterings. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Mounting: This Bulbophyllum thrives when mounted on a piece of cork bark or tree fern fibre. Use fishing line or wire to securely attach the plant to its mount.
