check_circle In Stock
Bulbophyllum lobbii var. gigantea 'Caramel Sundae' is a cultivated selection of the giant variety of this species, notable for its particularly large, richly coloured flowers. Native forms of B. lobbii occur widely across Southeast Asia, from Borneo to Thailand, in warm, humid forests. The variety gigantea produces some of the largest blooms in the group, and the 'Caramel Sundae' selection accentuates this with oversized flowers coloured caramel-yellow, often flushed with deeper brown or red markings. Like others in the species, the flower has a hinged lip adapted to fly pollination. Its size and distinctive coloration make it a prized specimen for collectors.
Distinctive Features
- Flowers: Produces large, showy flowers that can reach up to 15cm in diameter (approximately 6 inches). The flowers have a distinctive caramel colour with intricate patterns and a delightful fragrance.
- Pseudobulbs: Features prominent pseudobulbs, which are thickened stems that store water and nutrients. These pseudobulbs are typically 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches) and are spaced along the rhizome.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows horizontally along a rhizome, producing new growths and pseudobulbs along the way. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a shaded south-facing window is ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilisation during the winter months.
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in pots or mounted on cork bark or tree fern. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix that allows for good air circulation around the roots.
