The Large-Flowered Orchid: A Showstopping Epiphyte
Bulbophyllum macranthum is a truly remarkable orchid species that is sure to capture your attention with its impressive, large flowers and unique growth habit. This fascinating epiphyte is native to Southeast Asia and is a prized addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Ovoid pseudobulbs, spaced along a rhizome, that are typically 3-5cm long (approximately 1.25-2 inches). Each pseudobulb produces a single leaf.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 10-20cm long (approximately 4-8 inches).
- Flowers: Produces a single, large flower from the base of the pseudobulb. The flowers are typically 8-12cm in diameter (approximately 3-5 inches) and have a striking yellow-green colour with prominent red-purple markings. They often have a spicy fragrance.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally along a rhizome. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill is often ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical orchid to cold draughts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in pots or mounted on cork bark or tree fern. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix that provides good air circulation around the roots.
