Bulbophyllum medusae - The Medusa Orchid
check_circle In Stock
Bulbophyllum medusae, commonly referred to as the Medusa Orchid, is distributed across peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. It inhabits humid lowland and hill forests, usually at elevations between 300–1,200 m. The plant produces small pseudobulbs spaced along a creeping rhizome, each bearing a single leaf. Its most distinctive feature is the umbel-like inflorescence: dozens of flowers with long, thread-like sepals that cascade outward in all directions, forming a striking resemblance to Medusa’s mythological hair. Flowers are typically white to cream, occasionally tinged with yellow, and are adapted to attract fly pollinators. This unusual floral form makes it one of the most recognisable species in the genus.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, oval-shaped pseudobulbs that are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch). Each pseudobulb produces a single leaf.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves have a prominent midrib and a slightly wavy margin.
- Flowers: Produces a truly unique inflorescence with numerous long, slender, greenish-yellow sepals that resemble snakes. The sepals are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches) and are covered in fine hairs. The lip of the flower is small and purple.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally, producing new growths from the base of the previous ones. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill is often ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment. A light breeze or a position near a fan can be beneficial.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). This will help to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot with a well-draining orchid potting mix. Alternatively, it can be mounted on cork bark or tree fern fibre.
