Bulbophyllum medusae
The Medusa Orchid: A Captivating Epiphytic Wonder
Bulbophyllum medusae is a truly remarkable orchid species that hails from Southeast Asia. This fascinating epiphyte is renowned for its unique, snake-like blooms that resemble the mythical Medusa, making it a captivating addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, oval-shaped pseudobulbs that are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch). Each pseudobulb produces a single leaf.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves have a prominent midrib and a slightly wavy margin.
- Flowers: Produces a truly unique inflorescence with numerous long, slender, greenish-yellow sepals that resemble snakes. The sepals are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches) and are covered in fine hairs. The lip of the flower is small and purple.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally, producing new growths from the base of the previous ones. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill is often ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment. A light breeze or a position near a fan can be beneficial.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical gem to cold draughts or frost.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). This will help to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot with a well-draining orchid potting mix. Alternatively, it can be mounted on cork bark or tree fern fibre.
Additional Notes
- Bulbophyllum medusae is a fascinating and rewarding orchid to grow. With proper care, you will be rewarded with its unique and captivating blooms.
- This orchid can be propagated through division, separating the pseudobulbs and repotting them.
- Enjoy the intriguing beauty of the Medusa orchid and the fascinating world of orchids!
