The "Ant Plant" Orchid: A Marvel of Symbiosis
Bulbophyllum mirum is a truly remarkable orchid species that has evolved a fascinating symbiotic relationship with ants. This intriguing epiphyte, native to Southeast Asia, is a must-have for any orchid enthusiast or collector of unique plants.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, roundish pseudobulbs that are typically 1-2cm in diameter (approximately 0.5-1 inch). These pseudobulbs store water and nutrients, allowing the plant to thrive in its epiphytic lifestyle.
- Leaves: Each pseudobulb produces a single, leathery leaf that is typically 5-10cm long (approximately 2-4 inches). The leaves are dark green and have a slightly succulent texture.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, intricately detailed flowers that are typically reddish-brown in colour. The flowers have a unique, musky fragrance that attracts ants.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a creeping rhizome from which the pseudobulbs emerge. It naturally grows on trees, clinging to the bark with its roots. It can be grown mounted on cork bark or in a hanging basket with a well-draining epiphyte mix.
- Ant Symbiosis: This orchid has evolved specialised hollow pseudobulbs that provide shelter for ants. The ants, in turn, protect the plant from pests and provide nutrients through their waste.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser, diluted to half strength, every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal issues. Ensure the plant is in a well-ventilated environment.
Additional Notes
- Bulbophyllum mirum is a fascinating orchid that showcases the wonders of symbiosis in the natural world.
- While it may not be the easiest orchid to cultivate, with proper care and attention, you can enjoy its unique beauty and intriguing relationship with ants.
