The Exquisite Orchid: A Jewel for Your Collection
Bulbophyllum ornatissimum is a truly enchanting orchid species that captivates with its intricate flowers and captivating fragrance. This exquisite epiphyte is native to Southeast Asia and is a prized addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Slender, lance-shaped leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves are a vibrant green colour and have a slightly leathery texture.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of intricate, spider-like flowers that are typically white or cream in colour with delicate pink or purple markings. The flowers have a sweet, spicy fragrance that is simply divine.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a creeping rhizome from which the graceful leaves and flower spikes emerge. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a spot under a shade cloth is ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. You can use a well-draining orchid potting mix or mount the orchid on bark.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates high humidity, mimicking its natural rainforest habitat. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical orchid to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). This will help to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot or mounted on a piece of bark or cork. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix. If mounting, ensure that the roots are kept moist but not soggy.
