Bulbophyllum (ornatissimum x putidum)
check_circle In Stock
Bulbophyllum (ornatissimum × putidum) is a primary hybrid uniting two distinctive Southeast Asian species. From B. ornatissimum it inherits the clustered inflorescence and colourful yellow-green base tones marked with red or purple. From B. putidum, it gains elongated, trailing lateral sepals that can extend well beyond the rest of the flower, creating a dramatic display. Plants form small pseudobulbs on a creeping rhizome, each with a single leaf. Inflorescences bear umbels of flowers that combine the compact cluster of one parent with the extravagant sepal extensions of the other. As in many members of the genus, flowers are fly-pollinated, sometimes accompanied by a strong musky scent. This hybrid is cultivated by orchid enthusiasts for its unusual combination of form and colour.
Distinctive Features
- Flowers: Produces striking, intricately patterned flowers that are typically 3-5cm in diameter (approximately 1.25-2 inches). The flowers often exhibit a combination of colours, including yellow, red, and purple, with intricate markings and a unique, somewhat pungent fragrance.
- Pseudobulbs: Compact, oval-shaped pseudobulbs that are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch). Each pseudobulb produces one or two leaves.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves have a slightly folded appearance and contribute to the plant's overall compact form.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum hybrid has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally, producing new growths from the base of the previous ones. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a shaded south-facing window is often ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
- Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment. A light breeze or a position near a fan can help to prevent fungal issues.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this orchid to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilisation during the autumn and winter months.
- Potting Mix: Use a well-draining orchid potting mix that consists of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Repotting is typically done every 1-2 years as needed.
