Bulbophyllum ornatissimum
check_circle In Stock
Bulbophyllum ornatissimum occurs from the eastern Himalayan region through Myanmar and into northern Thailand and Laos. It inhabits humid montane forests, often found growing on tree trunks or mossy branches in shaded conditions. The plant forms small pseudobulbs each carrying a single leaf. Inflorescences arise from the rhizome and bear rounded umbels of flowers, typically yellow-green with prominent red or purple spotting and striping. The clustered floral display is characteristic of the group and adapted to attract fly pollinators. This species is favoured among collectors for its colourful flowers and compact habit.
Care Tips
- Light: Provide shaded to moderately bright, indirect light.
- Water: Requires frequent watering to maintain evenly moist roots.
- Media: Suitable for mounting on cork or tree fern, or in a fine orchid mix with sphagnum moss for added moisture.
- Fertiliser: Apply a dilute orchid fertiliser regularly during the active growing season.
- Temperature: Best in intermediate to warm conditions, around 16–26 °C, with high humidity.
- Air circulation: Ensure steady airflow to reduce the risk of fungal and bacterial issues.
- Repotting: Refresh medium or remount every 2–3 years to maintain healthy growth.
