Bulbophyllum retusiusculum
A Miniature Marvel with a Giant Flower
Bulbophyllum retusiusculum is a truly captivating miniature orchid that hails from the rainforests of Papua New Guinea. This unique epiphyte is prized for its diminutive size and surprisingly large, intricate flower, making it a fascinating addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, ovoid pseudobulbs that are typically 1-1.5cm long (approximately 0.5 inches). Each pseudobulb bears a single leaf.
- Leaves: Elliptical leaves that are typically 3-5cm long (approximately 1.5-2 inches) and have a deep green colour.
- Flowers: Produces a single, relatively large flower that can measure up to 8cm in diameter (approximately 3 inches). The flower is a striking combination of yellow, red, and purple hues, with intricate patterns and textures. It has a unique, musky fragrance.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a creeping rhizome, from which the pseudobulbs emerge. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot with a well-draining orchid potting mix or mounted on a piece of cork bark or tree fern fibre.
Additional Notes
- Bulbophyllum retusiusculum is a rewarding orchid to grow, offering a fascinating display of miniature foliage and a surprisingly large, intricate flower.
- This orchid can be propagated through division of the rhizome.
- With proper care, your Bulbophyllum retusiusculum will thrive and bring a touch of the exotic to your home. Enjoy its unique beauty and the fascinating world of orchids!
