Bulbophyllum retusiusculum is an orchid distributed from the Himalayan region through Nepal, Bhutan, northeast India, Myanmar, and into parts of Southeast Asia. It grows in moist montane forests, generally on trees in shaded conditions. The plant produces small, closely spaced pseudobulbs with single leaves. Its inflorescences arise at the base and form rounded umbels of many small flowers, usually pink to purple, sometimes with lighter centres. The clustered blooms create a distinctive ball-like display, a feature valued by orchid enthusiasts. This species is pollinated by flies, like many in the genus, often aided by a hinged floral lip.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, ovoid pseudobulbs that are typically 1-1.5cm long (approximately 0.5 inches). Each pseudobulb bears a single leaf.
- Leaves: Elliptical leaves that are typically 3-5cm long (approximately 1.5-2 inches) and have a deep green colour.
- Flowers: Produces a single, relatively large flower that can measure up to 8cm in diameter (approximately 3 inches). The flower is a striking combination of yellow, red, and purple hues, with intricate patterns and textures. It has a unique, musky fragrance.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a creeping rhizome, from which the pseudobulbs emerge. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot with a well-draining orchid potting mix or mounted on a piece of cork bark or tree fern fibre.
