The "Red Hot Poker" Orchid: A Fiery Delight
Bulbophyllum rothschildianum is a truly captivating orchid species that hails from the montane forests of India. This unique epiphyte is prized for its unusual, fiery-red inflorescence, resembling a red hot poker, making it a sought-after addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs: Small, ovoid pseudobulbs, each bearing a single leaf. These pseudobulbs are typically 2-3cm long (approximately 1 inch) and spaced along a creeping rhizome.
- Leaves: Leathery, dark green leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves are lanceolate in shape and have a prominent midrib.
- Flowers: Produces a striking inflorescence with numerous fiery-red, tubular flowers that emerge from the base of the pseudobulb. The inflorescence can reach up to 30cm (12 inches) in length and bears 10-20 individual flowers, each measuring approximately 2cm (0.8 inches) long.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally along a rhizome, producing new growths from the base of the previous ones. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a shaded spot under a grow light is ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate temperatures between 18-25°C (65-77°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this orchid to extreme temperatures or cold draughts.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilisation during the winter months.
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in pots or mounted on cork bark or tree fern. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix that provides good aeration for the roots.
