Bulbophyllum sikkimense is a small orchid species found in the eastern Himalayas, particularly in Sikkim, Bhutan, and northeastern India. It typically inhabits mossy montane forests at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 metres.
Distinctive Features
- Growth Habit: This epiphytic orchid is a mini-miniature, meaning it stays relatively small, making it perfect for those with limited space. It typically grows on trees in its natural habitat.
- Flowers: The most captivating feature of Bulbophyllum sikkimense is its unique flowers. They are yellowish with red and brown-coloured spots, featuring a sharp tip and hairs at the edges. The lip is broadly egg-shaped and narrows towards the apex.
- Fragrance: While some Bulbophyllum species are known for their fragrance, Bulbophyllum sikkimense has no discernible scent.
Care Tips
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, keeping the potting media moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.
- Humidity: Maintain high humidity levels, around 60-80%. You can achieve this by misting the plant regularly or using a humidifier.
- Temperature: This orchid prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18-28°C (64-82°F) during the day and 15-18°C (59-64°F) at night.
- Potting Media: Use a well-draining orchid potting mix, such as sphagnum moss or bark.
- Fertiliser: Fertilise weakly, every other week during the growing season (spring-summer) with a balanced orchid fertiliser.
- Air Circulation: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
