Bulbophyllum smitinandii is an orchid species native to Thailand, where it inhabits humid forested areas. The plant develops small, rounded pseudobulbs, each with a single narrow leaf. Its inflorescences are short and emerge from the base, carrying umbels of small flowers that are typically yellow-green with reddish to purple markings. Like many in the genus, the flowers are adapted to fly pollination, often with a hinged lip that moves when insects land. The species is of interest to orchid enthusiasts for its compact size and distinctive floral display.
Distinctive Features
- Pseudobulbs and Leaves: Small, clustered pseudobulbs, each bearing a single, leathery leaf. The leaves are typically 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches) and have a deep green colour.
- Flowers: Produces a fascinating inflorescence that resembles an umbrella. The flower spike emerges from the base of the pseudobulb and bears multiple, densely packed, small flowers with a creamy yellow colour and intricate patterns. The flowers often have a sweet fragrance.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally, producing new pseudobulbs along a rhizome. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a shaded spot under a grow light is ideal.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. It's best to use rainwater or distilled water to avoid mineral buildup.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a humidity tray, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid thrives in a well-draining potting mix, such as a mix formulated for orchids or a combination of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite. Repot every 1-2 years as needed.
