The Fan-Leaved Orchid: A Captivating Epiphytic Wonder
Bulbophyllum spathulatum is a truly remarkable orchid species that stands out with its distinctive fan-shaped leaves and intriguing flowers. This captivating epiphyte is native to Southeast Asia and is a prized addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Unique, fan-shaped leaves that are typically 8-12cm long (approximately 3-5 inches) and 4-6cm wide (approximately 1.5-2.5 inches). The leaves have a vibrant green colour and a slightly leathery texture.
- Flowers: Produces clusters of small, intricately detailed flowers that are typically yellow-green with reddish-brown markings. The flowers have a unique, slightly spicy fragrance.
- Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows horizontally with new growths emerging from the base of the previous ones. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Humidity: This Bulbophyllum appreciates moderate to high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in pots or mounted on cork bark or tree fern. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Bulbophyllum spathulatum is a relatively easy orchid to care for, making it a rewarding choice for both novice and experienced growers.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
- This Bulbophyllum can be propagated through division of the rhizome.
