Bulbophyllum treschii

Bulbophyllum treschii is a miniature orchid species native to parts of Southeast Asia, occurring in humid lowland and montane forests. It develops small, closely spaced pseudobulbs, each carrying a single leaf. The inflorescences are short and arise from the base of the pseudobulbs, producing a few small, often yellowish to greenish flowers with distinct markings. Like many in the genus, the flowers are adapted to attract flies for pollination. Its compact size and unusual flowers make it of interest to specialist orchid growers.

Distinctive Features

• Pseudobulbs and Leaves: Small, clustered pseudobulbs, each bearing a single, leathery leaf. The pseudobulbs are typically 1-2cm in diameter (approximately 0.5-1 inch), while the leaves are 5-8cm long (approximately 2-3 inches).
• Flowers: Produces a single, remarkably large and intricate flower from the base of each pseudobulb. The flower is typically 8-10cm in diameter (approximately 3-4 inches) and features a fascinating combination of colours, including yellow, red, and purple. The most striking feature is the long, thread-like lateral sepals that can reach up to 20cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
• Growth Habit: This Bulbophyllum has a creeping rhizome, from which the pseudobulbs emerge. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.

Care Tips

• Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves. An east-facing windowsill or a shaded spot under a grow light is ideal.
• Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. This orchid prefers a humid environment, so misting the leaves regularly can be beneficial.
• Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial for orchids. Ensure that the plant is not placed in a stagnant or enclosed environment.
• Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth.
• Fertiliser: Use a diluted orchid fertiliser once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Potting: This orchid thrives in a well-draining orchid potting mix. A mix of bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite is ideal.
