Bulbophyllum Vindobona – rothschildianum × ornatissimum

Bulbophyllum Vindobona is a captivating registered hybrid between Bulbophyllum ornatissimum and Bulbophyllum rothschildianum, first registered in 1975. Combining the best of both parents, it offers large, showy flowers with elongated sepals, dramatic stripes, and a scent that is unmistakably Bulbophyllum. Native to the moist tropical forests of Southeast Asia, both parents contribute vigour, beauty, and a touch of the bizarre.

Distinctive Features

• Hybrid Origin: Cross between two flamboyant species, resulting in large, pendulous blooms with intricate patterns and bold form.
• Inflorescence: Multiple-flowered racemes with long, twisted sepals, showcasing a striped maroon and yellow colouration.
• Foliage and Habit: Medium-sized epiphyte with tightly clustered pseudobulbs and stiff, oblong leaves; best grown mounted or in baskets.

Care Tips

• Light: Provide bright, filtered light; avoid direct afternoon sun.
• Water: Maintain even moisture during the growing season; allow slight drying during rest.
• Humidity: Thrives in 70–90% humidity with excellent air circulation.
• Media: Mount on cork/slab with sphagnum or use fine orchid bark in baskets for airflow.
• Temperature: Best grown warm, between 18–28°C.
• Fertiliser: Fortnightly with a diluted balanced orchid fertiliser during growth.
