Goeppertia veitchiana (Syn. Calathea veitchiana) 'Medallion': Striking Foliage for Indoor Elegance
Goeppertia veitchiana 'Medallion', previously known as Calathea veitchiana, is native to the lush tropical rainforests of Ecuador. This striking perennial is highly valued for its stunning ornamental leaves, featuring intricate patterns in shades of dark green and silver, complemented by rich purple undersides. Renowned for its intriguing movement, the leaves fold up at night, earning it the popular name 'Prayer Plant'.
Distinctive features:
- Leaves: Broad, oval-shaped foliage decorated with eye-catching silver and dark green feathered patterns and burgundy undersides.
- Habit: Upright, clumping growth habit, reaching heights of approximately 60 cm indoors.
- Movement: Fascinating nyctinastic leaves that fold upwards during night-time, adding dynamic interest.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright indirect light; avoid direct sunlight as it may scorch the foliage.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; use lukewarm, filtered water to prevent leaf spotting.
- Humidity: Requires high humidity levels (60–80%) to thrive; regular misting or using a humidifier is beneficial.
- Media: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix rich in organic matter.
- Temperature: Maintain between 18–26°C; avoid temperatures below 15°C to prevent stress and leaf damage.
- Fertiliser: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half-strength monthly during the growing season.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring when root-bound; select a slightly larger container with adequate drainage.
Additional Notes
- Non-toxic to pets and safe for households with cats and dogs.
- Sensitive to draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can cause leaf curling or browning.
Goeppertia veitchiana 'Medallion' is a remarkable plant, ideal for bringing striking foliage patterns and captivating movement to your indoor plant collection. With proper care, it thrives as a statement plant, enriching your living spaces with tropical elegance.
