Calathea roseopicta ‘Silver Plate’ (syn. Geoppertia roseopicta)
Calathea roseopicta ‘Silver Plate’ is a cultivated form of Calathea roseopicta, a species currently accepted under the name Goeppertia roseopicta. Native to the shaded forest floors of northwestern Brazil, this species thrives in humid, warm conditions beneath a dense canopy. The cultivar ‘Silver Plate’ has been selected for its foliar markings, which differ noticeably from the wild type. Its broad, ovate leaves feature a pale silvery centre framed by a darker green margin, with subtle pinkish patterning that traces along the midrib and secondary venation.
Distinctive features:
- Silvery central leaf zone with green margins and soft pink tracery
- Leaf undersides typically rich maroon or purplish, especially when young
- Broad, rounded leaf blades up to 30 cm in length
- Compact clumping habit with leaves arising from a short stem base
Care Tips:
- Light: Performs best in filtered or indirect light; direct sun may damage foliage
- Water: Maintain consistent soil moisture without waterlogging
- Humidity: Requires high humidity; dry air can cause leaf edge browning
- Media: Use a well-aerated potting mix with organic content and good drainage
- Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C; sensitive to cold or fluctuating temperatures
- Fertiliser: Apply a half-strength liquid fertiliser monthly during active growth
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years to refresh substrate and manage root growth
Additional Notes:
- Leaf movement may be observed in response to day-night cycles
- Keep away from cold draughts and dry heating vents
- Non-toxic to cats and dogs according to ASPCA listings
