Calibanus hookeri is a captivating succulent that will add a touch of the exotic to your plant collection. This rare species, native to Mexico, is prized for its unique ponytail-like form and intriguing growth habit, with long, grass-like leaves cascading from the top of its caudex.

Distinctive Features

  • Caudex: Large, swollen caudex that stores water and nutrients. The caudex is typically a grey-brown colour and has a rough, textured surface.
  • Leaves: Long, thin, grass-like leaves that emerge from the top of the caudex, resembling a ponytail. The leaves are typically a blue-green colour and have a rough texture.
  • Flowers: Produces small, white flowers on tall stalks. However, flowering is not common in cultivated plants.
  • Growth Habit: This Calibanus has a solitary growth habit. It typically reaches a height of 30-60cm (12-24 inches) and a caudex diameter of 15-20cm (6-8 inches).

Care Tips

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is best. While it enjoys some direct sunlight, intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to be cautious.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix. You can also add perlite or pumice to improve drainage.

WA, NT & TAS Orders

  • Cut-off: Orders to WA, NT and TAS must be placed by Friday 7am (AEST) to be included in the following week’s dispatch.
  • Treatment & Delay: These orders require biosecurity treatment and certification, which is completed each Friday. Please allow an additional 1–2 weeks for processing.

Plant Health Certification (PHAC) Fees

  • $20 fee applies to WA orders.
  • $10 fee applies to NT and TAS orders.
  • This fee is per order (not per plant) and is included in your shipping cost at checkout.
