Cereus 'Ming Thing' – A Unique Monstrose Cactus
Cereus 'Ming Thing' is a striking monstrose cultivar of Cereus species, renowned for its unusual, knobby, clustered growth. Native to South America, this slow-growing cactus develops thick, irregular blue-green stems, forming sculptural, coral-like mounds. Its distinct aesthetic and compact size make it a prized choice for collectors and succulent enthusiasts.
Distinctive Features
- Monstrose Growth: Instead of typical columnar growth, this variety produces twisted, bumpy, irregular stems.
- Blue-Green Colour: The thick, fleshy stems have a powdery, bluish hue, adding to their ornamental appeal.
- Compact and Clustering: Unlike standard Cereus species, it forms dense clusters, making it ideal for small pots and containers.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sun; too much direct sun can cause sunburn.
- Water: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings; overwatering can lead to rot.
- Humidity: Thrives in dry to moderate humidity; avoid excessive moisture.
- Temperature: Keep above 10°C; protect from frost as it is not cold-hardy.
- Fertiliser: Use a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer) every 4-6 weeks.
- Potting: Requires well-draining cactus mix with added perlite or pumice.
- Propagation: Best propagated by stem cuttings; allow cuttings to callous before planting.
Additional Notes
- Slow-growing and can take years to develop its full sculptural form.
- Rarely flowers, but mature specimens may produce small, white nocturnal blooms.
- Non-toxic to pets but has sharp spines, so handle with care.
Cereus 'Ming Thing' is a fascinating cactus with an architectural presence, making it an excellent choice for collectors and decorative displays. Its slow growth and low-maintenance nature add to its appeal, ensuring that this cactus remains a distinctive centrepiece in any succulent arrangement.
