Cereus tetragonus 'Fairy Castle' – Enchanting Columnar Cactus
Cereus tetragonus 'Fairy Castle' is a striking slow-growing columnar cactus known for its charming, turret-like growth pattern. Native to North and Central America, this cultivated variety develops numerous upright green stems adorned with soft, short spines, forming a dense, castle-like structure. A popular ornamental cactus, it is often kept as a low-maintenance houseplant but rarely flowers in cultivation.
Distinctive Features
- Castle-like Structure: Multiple columnar stems of varying heights create a fairytale castle appearance.
- Short, Soft Spines: White or yellowish spines line the ribbed green stems, providing a striking contrast.
- Slow Growth Rate: Grows gradually, making it an excellent long-term decorative plant.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun. A sunny windowsill is ideal for indoor growth.
- Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
- Humidity: Thrives in dry conditions; does not require additional humidity.
- Media: Well-draining cactus mix with sand or perlite to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Best kept between 18-30°C but can tolerate down to 10°C.
- Fertiliser: Feed with a diluted cactus fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Repotting: Repot every few years in a slightly larger container with fresh soil.
Additional Notes
- Rarely flowers indoors, but mature specimens may produce white or yellow blooms.
- Ideal for beginners due to its hardy nature and minimal care requirements.
- Not for sale or distribution in Western Australia (WA) due to regional plant restrictions.
