Ceropegia woodii 'Chain of Hearts' Variegated

Ceropegia woodii 'Chain of Hearts' Variegated makes an excellent hanging basket plant, naturally forming long, trailing stems that spill downward as they mature. From a single tuber, it produces fine, flexible growth lined with small heart-shaped leaves patterned in soft greens, creams, and often a wash of pink. Colour shifts with light and season, with stronger light encouraging denser growth and clearer contrast through the foliage. Over time, the plant develops an easy, cascading habit that suits shelves, hanging pots, or high ledges.
The species Ceropegia woodii is native to southern Africa, where it grows in areas with irregular rainfall and pronounced dry periods. This background is clear in cultivation. The underground tuber stores water and energy, allowing the plant to tolerate missed waterings, while remaining sensitive to constantly wet conditions. Small, tubular flowers may appear during warmer months and are usually noticed only when viewed up close.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Some direct sun is tolerated and often improves leaf colour.
- Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry well before watering again. Slight dryness is preferred over constant moisture.
- Media: Use a free-draining mix, such as a succulent blend with added grit or pumice.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser during warmer months. Feeding can be reduced or paused in cooler periods.
- Temperature: Grows comfortably between 15-28 °C. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold.
- Repotting: Repot only when necessary. Keeping the tuber slightly tight in the pot supports steady growth.
