The cristate form (Cleistocactus winteri subsp. aureispina f. cristata) is a rare and highly sought-after cactus, forming twisting, fan-like crests covered with soft golden spines. Unlike the normal trailing form, this variety develops a sculptural mound of contorted growth. Very hardy and slow-growing. This plant will be sent bare-rooted (without soil) for safe shipping.
Care
Light: Bright light to full sun; filtered sun recommended in extreme heat.
Water: Water well in summer, allowing soil to dry between waterings; reduce watering in winter.
Temperature: Warm-growing, protect from frost.
Media: Free-draining cactus mix is essential to prevent rot.
Fertiliser: Apply low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser during the growing season to encourage compact, healthy growth.
Clumping: Forms mounds 15–20 cm across over several years
Flowering: Rare in cultivation, orange flowers may appear on mature plants
Display: Excellent sculptural specimen for pots or shallow bowls
