Coelogyne glumacea, formerly known under the synonym Dendrochilum glumaceum, is an epiphytic or lithophytic orchid native to the moist montane forests of the Philippines and Borneo. This species is celebrated for its pendant spikes bearing rows of creamy to pale yellow flowers with intricate orange-marked lips, emerging from compact pseudobulbs.
Distinctive Features
- Flower Structure: Numerous tiny blooms align along slender arching inflorescences, giving a feathery appearance from a distance.
- Colour & Fragrance: Each flower displays pale cream to lemon petals with a contrasting orange-marked labellum, often accompanied by a light, sweet scent.
- Growth Habit: Forms neat, compact clumps with cylindrical pseudobulbs and fine grassy foliage, suitable for hanging baskets or mounted culture.
Care Tips
- Light: Thrives in bright, filtered light. Avoid direct midday sun, especially in summer.
- Water: Prefers evenly moist conditions during active growth, with reduced watering during winter rest.
- Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (60–80%) to replicate its native forest conditions.
- Media: A fine-grade orchid mix with bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite ensures both drainage and moisture retention.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 12–25 °C; protect from temperatures below 10 °C.
- Fertiliser: Feed fortnightly with a balanced orchid fertiliser during spring and summer; reduce to monthly in autumn and winter.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when media breaks down. Avoid disturbing roots unless necessary.
