Coelogyne tenellum (syn. Dendrochilum tenellum) - The Delicate Chain Orchid
The Delicate Chain Orchid: A Miniature Marvel
Coelogyne tenellum (formerly known as Dendrochilum tenellum) is a truly captivating orchid species that is admired for its delicate, chain-like flower clusters and graceful foliage. This miniature marvel is native to Southeast Asia and is a delightful addition to any orchid collection.
Distinctive Features
- Leaves: Slender, lance-shaped leaves that are typically 10-15cm long (approximately 4-6 inches). The leaves are a vibrant green colour and have a slightly pleated texture.
- Flowers: Produces pendant chains of small, fragrant flowers that are typically white or cream in colour. The flowers are densely arranged along the chain, creating a beautiful, cascading effect.
- Growth Habit: This Coelogyne has a sympodial growth habit, meaning it grows laterally and produces new growths from the base of the previous ones. It is an epiphyte, which means it naturally grows on trees and other surfaces, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
Care Tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Water regularly, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Humidity: This Coelogyne appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or misting the leaves regularly.
- Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm temperatures between 18-29°C (65-85°F) for optimal growth. Avoid exposing this tropical orchid to cold draughts or temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
- Fertiliser: Use a balanced orchid fertiliser at half strength every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Potting: This orchid can be grown in a pot or mounted on a piece of bark or cork. Use a well-draining orchid potting mix.
Additional Notes
- Coelogyne tenellum is a relatively easy orchid to care for, making it a rewarding plant for both novice and experienced growers.
- Provide good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues. A well-ventilated environment is crucial for healthy orchid growth.
