Coelogyne tenellum (syn. Dendrochilum tenellum) - The Delicate Chain Orchid

Coelogyne tenellum (syn. Dendrochilum tenellum) is a delicate miniature orchid producing slender, arching sprays of tiny white to cream flowers. Each spike carries dozens of blossoms that open in sequence, creating a soft, airy display through the warmer months. This compact species is native to Southeast Asia and is ideal for small spaces, terrariums, or hanging baskets.

This form was previously classified as Dendrochilum tenellum but is now recognised under Coelogyne. It’s an easy grower under intermediate to warm conditions, forming dense clumps of fine, grass-like foliage that flower freely once established.

Care

• Light: Bright filtered light to partial shade; avoid full sun exposure.
• Temperature: Intermediate to warm-growing; prefers 16–28 °C.
• Water: Keep evenly moist year-round; avoid letting the mix dry completely.
• Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity with good air movement.
• Media: Fine-grade orchid bark mix or sphagnum moss in a small pot or basket.
• Feeding: Apply diluted orchid fertiliser fortnightly during the growing season.
